This one gave me back my original default HP desktop wallpaper and B&O audio software, etc. I then did a second fresh install from within my laptop, which now seemed to be fine. This was a barebones installation, blank blue desktop, etc.
I used another laptop to download Media Creation Tool to a USB, and reinstalled Windows completely fresh. Absolutely nothing would enable it to boot. I did a system restore to before the infection, just in case, and powered down. Various scans and threat removals later, it looked like everything bad was cleared out. Turns out that three folders, C, C:, and (I think.) program files had been added to Defender's exclusion list.Īlso some executables had been added to my Public/Downloads folder (a folder I would never use) I discovered it when a random Windows Defender scan showed zero threats, but that it had skipped some folders that were excluded. Back around 19th April I picked up a trojan.
